EMU's New Art Exhibit Draws Praise

Posted on 4/25/2008 by Jeremy Aldrich

HARRISONBURG - A new exhibit at EMU's library is drawing rave reviews from across the political spectrum. Entitled "Hate Your Enemies", the interactive exhibit features pictures of oft-maligned non-American world leaders like Kim Jong-Il, Muqtada Al-Sadr, and Hugo Chavez. Visitors are encouraged to yell insults, throw darts, spit on, and rip up the pictures.

"Artistic types like it because they think it's about the difference between image and reality," explains EMU's curator of special exhibits Jean Kreider. "Progressive Christians like it because it points out the contrast between Christ's commands to love our enemies and our national culture. And conservatives like it because...well, you'll have to ask them why they like it, but they're the most enthusiastic visitors by far."

This exhibit follows on the heels of a recent controversy over art at EMU. Recently, artist Herb Weaver included a piece called "Piss for Peace" which featured a urinal with pictures of President Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and Condoleeza Rice. The same urinal was used in the current exhibition, only with the pictures replaced. Unlike the previous display which set off a firestorm of criticism, the current display has strangely received nothing but plaudits and accolade.
