Silent Protest Goes Unnoticed
BRIDGEWATER - What if they had a protest and no one noticed? Bridgewater College sophomore Paul Nelson wanted to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Iraq War today by wearing subdued colors, but none of his professors or peers even remarked on the change from his usually more colorful attire.
"I don't get it," complained Nelson. "I never wear dark clothing, but it's like no one even cared. And it would have been weird to be like, 'Hey, ask me why I've got on a dark brown shirt and black slacks today.'"
Nelson says he considered doing something more obvious, like wearing a button or even a t-shirt with an anti-war message, but didn't want to be seen as "too radical". He says he thought surely he would have at least one opportunity to talk about his opposition to what he considers an unjustified, costly, and unwinnable war, but none of the people in his classes, dining at KCC or walking around campus raised an eyebrow at his unusual style.
"I even walked slowly back and forth between Wakeman Hall and Nininger twice looking glum, but no one bit on my obvious attempt to be noticed. How is a guy supposed to subtly protest an unjust war in an apathetic environment like this?"
